25th Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration: We are a generation for equality

Representative of the organization … IZ KRUGA – VOJVODINA Svjetlana Timotic, participated in the event organized by the Coordination Body for Gender Equality of the Government of the Republic of Serbia, the Ministry of European Integration, the EU Delegation to Serbia and the United Nations Agency for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment on the occasion of International Women’s Day (UN WOMEN).

The International Women’s Day was celebrated on March 6, 2020 at the National Library of Serbia as part of the EU-funded project Key Steps to Gender Equality. This year’s theme is International Women’s Day We are a generation for equality, realized within the broader global UN WOMEN campaign Generation for Equality, which commemorates the 25th anniversary of the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platforna for Action.

The Declaration and Platform were adopted at the Fourth World Conference on Women in September 1995 in Beijing after the UN decade dedicated to the fight for women’s human rights. The basic idea of the Beijing Declaration is to advance the goals of equality, peace development for the benefit of all women in the world and in the interest of humanity as a whole.

Today’s position of women in the key 12 areas: education, health, economy, human rights, media, violence, armed conflicts, government and decision making, poverty, institutional mechanisms for advancing the position of women, the environment and the position of women and girls, was presented by 12 activists, professors, ministers, ambassadors who are fighting for gender equality in these areas.

Nevena Petrusic, Regular Professor at the Faculty of Law, University of Nis, Ivanka Popovic, Rector of the University of Belgrade, Slavica Djukic Dejanovic, Minister without portfolio in charge of demography and population policy, Jane Knutrud, Deputy Norwegian Ambassador, Zorica Mrsevic, Institute of Social Sciences, Sanja Nikolin, Women’s Platform for Development of Serbia, Rebecca Fabrici, Deputy British Ambassador, Ljilja Loncar, Coordination Body for Gender Equality, Svjetlana Timotic, … IZ KRUGA – VOJVODINA, Nikola Faj, Deputy French Ambassador, Maja Lalic, Silvija Nesic, Roma activist presented the 12 areas of the Beijing Declaration, with more than a hundred guests from the government and non-government sectors in attendance.
