25th Anniversary of the Beijing Declaration: We are a generation for equality


Rep­re­sen­ta­tive of the orga­ni­za­tion IZ KRUGAVOJVODINA Svjet­lana Tim­o­t­ic, par­tic­i­pat­ed in the event orga­nized by the Coor­di­na­tion Body for Gen­der Equal­i­ty of the Gov­ern­ment of the Repub­lic of Ser­bia, the Min­istry of Euro­pean Inte­gra­tion, the EU Del­e­ga­tion to Ser­bia and the Unit­ed Nations Agency for Gen­der Equal­i­ty and Women’s Empow­er­ment on the occa­sion of Inter­na­tion­al Women’s Day (UN WOMEN).

The Inter­na­tion­al Women’s Day was cel­e­brat­ed on March 6, 2020 at the Nation­al Library of Ser­bia as part of the EU-fund­ed project Key Steps to Gen­der Equal­i­ty. This year’s theme is Inter­na­tion­al Women’s Day We are a gen­er­a­tion for equal­i­ty, real­ized with­in the broad­er glob­al UN WOMEN cam­paign Gen­er­a­tion for Equal­i­ty, which com­mem­o­rates the 25th anniver­sary of the adop­tion of the Bei­jing Dec­la­ra­tion and Plat­for­na for Action.

The Dec­la­ra­tion and Plat­form were adopt­ed at the Fourth World Con­fer­ence on Women in Sep­tem­ber 1995 in Bei­jing after the UN decade ded­i­cat­ed to the fight for women’s human rights. The basic idea of the Bei­jing Dec­la­ra­tion is to advance the goals of equal­i­ty, peace devel­op­ment for the ben­e­fit of all women in the world and in the inter­est of human­i­ty as a whole.

Today’s posi­tion of women in the key 12 areas: edu­ca­tion, health, econ­o­my, human rights, media, vio­lence, armed con­flicts, gov­ern­ment and deci­sion mak­ing, pover­ty, insti­tu­tion­al mech­a­nisms for advanc­ing the posi­tion of women, the envi­ron­ment and the posi­tion of women and girls, was pre­sent­ed by 12 activists, pro­fes­sors, min­is­ters, ambas­sadors who are fight­ing for gen­der equal­i­ty in these areas.

Neve­na Petru­sic, Reg­u­lar Pro­fes­sor at the Fac­ul­ty of Law, Uni­ver­si­ty of Nis, Ivan­ka Popovic, Rec­tor of the Uni­ver­si­ty of Bel­grade, Slav­i­ca Dju­kic Dejanovic, Min­is­ter with­out port­fo­lio in charge of demog­ra­phy and pop­u­la­tion pol­i­cy, Jane Knu­trud, Deputy Nor­we­gian Ambas­sador, Zor­i­ca Mrse­vic, Insti­tute of Social Sci­ences, San­ja Nikolin, Women’s Plat­form for Devel­op­ment of Ser­bia, Rebec­ca Fabri­ci, Deputy British Ambas­sador, Ljil­ja Lon­car, Coor­di­na­tion Body for Gen­der Equal­i­ty, Svjet­lana Tim­o­t­ic, IZ KRUGAVOJVODINA, Niko­la Faj, Deputy French Ambas­sador, Maja Lal­ic, Sil­vi­ja Nesic, Roma activist pre­sent­ed the 12 areas of the Bei­jing Dec­la­ra­tion, with more than a hun­dred guests from the gov­ern­ment and non-gov­ern­ment sec­tors in atten­dance.
